History of Plastics

The plastic industry came to life in 1910. Phenolics were made possible by Leo Hendrik Baekeland as the first synthetic resins to become successful. World War II also pushed plastics into the commercial market by supplying substitutes for scarce products like rubber. Plastics allow for lower cost production and the ability to manufacture in mass quantities. Below is a timeline of familiar products the plastics industry made possible.
